CGPA to Percentage Calculator – Convert your CGPA for job forms and admission portals – using the rule your boar

Quick answer: there is no single worldwide formula. On a 10-point scale, CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5 (8.6 → 81.7%). The simple conversion divides by the scale: 3.4 out of 4 = 3.4 ÷ 4 × 100 = 85%. Many universities print their own rule on the transcript – if yours does, use that multiplier.

Which rule should I use?

Where your CGPA is fromCommon ruleExample
CBSE (India, Class 10 under CCE)CGPA × 9.58.6 → 81.7%
Universities that publish a multiplierCGPA × their number (often 9.5 or 10)7.5 × 10 → 75%
4.0-scale universities (Pakistan, US-style)No official formula; many employers use CGPA ÷ 4 × 1003.4 → 85%
5-point scalesCGPA ÷ 5 × 100 unless stated4.2 → 84%

Several Indian universities (VTU, Mumbai University, Anna University and others) publish their own formulas, some with a subtraction such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Pakistani universities under HEC generally don’t define one official conversion, so job forms usually accept the simple scale conversion – but your university’s registrar can issue a percentage-equivalence letter if one is needed.

Why the CBSE rule uses 9.5

CBSE compared the CGPA of its students with their marks over several years and found that, on average, 9.5 times the grade point matched the percentage. It is an average fit, not an exact conversion – which is why it only applies to CBSE results.

Percentage back to CGPA

Switch the direction to “Percentage → CGPA” and the same rule is reversed: 81.7% ÷ 9.5 = 8.6 under CBSE; 85% ÷ 25 = 3.4 on a 4-point scale.

Mistakes to avoid on application forms

  • Converting when the form asks for CGPA – give exactly what is requested.
  • Using the CBSE rule for a university CGPA.
  • Rounding up: 81.65% is 81.65%, not 82%.
  • Leaving out the scale: write “3.4/4.0”, never just “3.4”.
