Quick answer: use the GS1 data builder: pick (01) for the GTIN, (17) for the expiry date, (10) for the batch and so on, fill in the values and press “Put into the barcode”. Brackets around the AIs are only for the printed text – the barcode stores the data with the correct FNC1 separators. For pallet labels choose SSCC-18.
Application Identifiers in plain words
An Application Identifier (AI) is a short number that says what the following data means. Scanners and warehouse systems split the barcode into fields using these AIs, so one barcode can carry the product, its batch and its expiry date at the same time.
| AI | Meaning | Format |
|---|---|---|
| (00) | SSCC – serial shipping container code for a pallet or parcel | 18 digits |
| (01) | GTIN of the trade item | 14 digits |
| (02) | GTIN of the items inside a logistic unit | 14 digits |
| (10) | Batch or lot number | up to 20 characters |
| (11) / (13) / (15) / (17) | Production / packing / best-before / expiry date | YYMMDD |
| (21) | Serial number | up to 20 characters |
| (310n) | Net weight in kg, n = decimal places | 6 digits |
| (37) | Number of trade items in the unit | up to 8 digits |
| (400) | Customer's purchase order number | up to 30 characters |
Put fixed-length fields such as (01) and (17) first and variable-length fields such as (10) or (21) last – that keeps the barcode shorter because fewer FNC1 separators are needed.
How to create a GS1-128 barcode
- Choose the fields. In the builder pick the Application Identifiers you need: (01) GTIN, (10) batch, (17) expiry, (3103) weight, (00) SSCC and more.
- Fill in the values. Enter 13 digits for a GTIN or 17 for an SSCC – the check digit is added. Dates are YYMMDD, e.g. 271231.
- Put them into the barcode. Press the button. The preview shows the barcode with the AIs in brackets below it.
- Print the label. For logistic labels keep the bar width at 0.495 mm or more and the height at 31.75 mm. Download PDF for your label software.
SSCC pallet labels
The Serial Shipping Container Code identifies one physical pallet or parcel for its whole journey. It is 18 digits: an extension digit you choose, your GS1 company prefix, a serial reference and a check digit. Every pallet needs its own SSCC, never reused for a year. Choose “SSCC-18” in the type list, enter the 17 digits and the check digit is added.
Size rules for logistic labels
- GS1 asks for a bar width of 0.495 to 1.016 mm on logistic labels and a bar height of at least 31.75 mm (1.25 in).
- A barcode longer than about 165 mm will not fit the standard A6 / 4×6 in label – split the data over two barcodes if needed.
- The quiet zone is 10 bar widths on each side.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Code 128 and GS1-128?
GS1-128 is Code 128 that starts with a special FNC1 character. It tells the scanner that the content follows GS1 Application Identifier rules.
Are the brackets stored in the barcode?
No. The brackets only appear in the human-readable text. The barcode stores the AIs and data, plus FNC1 separators after variable-length fields.
Why does the tool reject my date?
GS1 dates are YYMMDD. A day of 00 is allowed and means “last day of the month”, but months must be 01–12.
Can I put weight and price in one barcode?
Yes. Add (3103) for net weight in kg with three decimals, and other AIs as needed. Keep the barcode within the width of your label.
Where does my SSCC number come from?
You build it from your GS1 company prefix and your own serial numbers. GS1 does not issue individual SSCCs.
Is GS1-128 used on retail products?
No, it is for cartons, pallets and other logistic units. Products at the till use EAN-13 or UPC-A.
